Khonoma
Why Khonoma
Khonoma is an Angami Naga village in the hills near Kohima, in Nagaland. Its stone houses and terraced fields sit on a ridge above the valley. The village is known for a decision its people took together: they stopped hunting in the surrounding forest and set it aside for conservation. It is often called India's first green village. We picked it for a retreat on community and collective action: how a group of people agree on a hard change, and make it stick.
For founders building communities, marketplaces, or anything that depends on many people acting together.
What you'll do there
- Walk through the village and its terraced fields
- Hear how the community decided to protect its forest
- A day hike in the hills around Khonoma
- A session on getting people to commit to a shared goal
